I have spent much of my career trying to understand how financial institutions and businesses operate in emerging markets, particularly when the reality on the ground is more complicated than the numbers alone suggest. I have worked in London, Hong Kong, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Monaco and Paris, investing across emerging markets and later conducting due diligence across Africa and Asia. My career began in investment management, including analysing Brazilian banks at Schroders, running its Argentine fund-management business, and later managing emerging-market equity funds at Edmond de Rothschild and Clay Asset Management. Since 2016, I have focused increasingly on financial-sector due diligence, working with Broadpeak and institutional investors, along with development finance organisations, on banks, microfinance institutions and other lenders across a wide range of emerging markets. What interests me most is the point where financial analysis meets the less easily quantified aspects of an institution: management quality, governance, incentives, risk culture and the economic and regulatory environment in which it operates. I have also lectured on emerging markets finance at HEC, contributed to CGAP publications besides creating and hosting the Let’s Talk Microfinance podcast. Having lived and worked across Europe, Latin America and Asia, and speaking French, Portuguese and Spanish, I especially enjoy assignments where understanding the local political and economic context is as important as analysing the balance sheet.
